2025 Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance

September 13 & 14

Every September my photography calendar is marked and time is set aside for a fantastic display of rare and unique cars as the Cobble Beach Concours d'Elegance lines the resort’s 18th fairway. This collection of vehicles include examples that are one-of-a-kind, immaculately preserved, and ones thought long lost to bring one of North America’s best concours events to the shores of Georgian Bay.

I’ve been a regular attendee of the Cobble Beach Concours since 2013 and each year brings new opportunities to try new styles and photographic techniques, meet a whole host of great people, and try to keep my cool during a weekend filled with legendary cars!

Cars and Coffee and Concours d’Lemons

This year Cars & Coffee returned to Owen Sound’s River District with a warm cup of coffee and warmed up engines throughout the downtown! The district encompasses the historic downtown along with a block or two north and south of the main street. With heritage buildings and classic cars lining the streets, it wasn’t hard to find photogenic scenes on a sunny afternoon.

Notable among the Cars & Coffee entrants was a 1938 Tatra T97 featuring a rare pre-war inline four cylinder engine that had been purchased by its new owner only weeks before. With sleek aerodynamic styling and a nice layer of patina, that was one car I kept coming back to from different angles throughout the morning.

Across the river in Owen Sound’s River District was the tongue-in-cheek Concours d’Lemons presented by Hagerty Insurance. The “concours” celebrates the forgotten, unloved, and overlooked cars of the recent past and is one of the only places outside of a scrapyard or my high school parking lot where you’ll see a Pontiac Grand Prix and a Chevy Lumina parked side by side.

The Concours d’Lemons is always a lot of fun and is a nice counterbalance to the fanciness of the rest of the Cobble Beach weekend. Based on the number of people I saw walking down the line there should be even more lemons on 1st Avenue West next year!

Pre-show and Load-In

After seeing the sights in Owen Sound I headed up to the Cobble Beach Golf Resort to get some photos of cars loading in for the concours the following day. The afternoon load-in is a fantastic opportunity to get photos of cars being cleaned, chat with the drivers, and to see the vehicles during the calm before the storm!

About 1/4 of the concours entrants were on the field by the end of Saturday including some great microcars, a couple vintage British motorbikes, and two pristine Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs. 12 hours later I’d be back at Cobble for what was shaping up to be a clear early morning sunrise.

Concours Morning

Since I first started attending Cobble Beach as a freelance photographer in 2018, Sunday morning starts before the sun comes up the 18th fairway. Getting there first thing means getting some unique looks at cars loading in that morning and, this year, catching an amazing sunrise over Georgian Bay. This year’s weather was the best in a while, and the blue hour before sunrise gave way to clear skies and a beautiful sunrise to highlight this year’s entrants.

I hustled up and down the fairway getting different shots and angles before grabbing a coffee and following the judging as each class was evaluated. By that time the show was also open to the public, which adds a level of excitement and some new possibilities for capturing what the show is all about. Owners showing off their automotive treasures with people, and people soaking up a warm September day along Georgian Bay!

Concours Awards

On Sunday afternoon the judging was complete and it was time for the awards ceremony. The sun was out and some light clouds had the cars looked fantastic as they drove up to receive their awards.

This year I took the opportunity to grab a few people-free photos of cars at the start of the ceremony before settling by the awards tent to get the cars driving back in front of the seating area and the Cobble Beach clubhouse. It’s a tricky angle as the sun is shining right towards you, but it lets you get some great shots of proud drivers and the crowd that makes it all possible!

With some stiff competition the awards for Outstanding Pre-War car went to a 1932 Duesenberg Model J owned by William Miller from Frankfort, IN, Cobble Beach regular and proud Newfoundlander Vernon Smith won the Outstanding Post-War award for his enormous 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz and the Best of Show awards went to a 1938 Steyr 220 Roadster driven by Peter Boyle from Oil City, PA. This wasn’t the first time that Steyr roadster had been at the concours, but it was the first time it’s won a well-deserved major award!
